Guests on April 15th were Elders Dan and Lila Sam. It was an good opportunity to learn something of their life experiences. In the case of Lila, she was one of the children who was enrolled in a school designed to teach her the English language and which her mother had expected would give her a better education than she could get in the local public school system. As she said in her talk, that was a mistake. Her mother could have had no idea what was in store for her at the school she attended for three years. Listening to her now that she is a great grandmother, everyone was appalled at the insensitivity of her teachers in her school days but were impressed with the dignity with which she told her story.
Dan gave us a brief sketch of his young life amd his struggles over the years. He also expressed some of the ideas and teachings of his elders that have guided him through his life. His intelligence - and humour, too - kept everyone quite enthralled. We were very glad he had been asked to join us as we look more closely into "Truth and Reconciliation."
