Our minister is the Reverend David Drake. He has been with the United Church of Canada in various locations and differing circumstances as an ordained minister for nearly 25 years now. Previous to St Paul’s United Church in Sidney, David worked in Calgary, Alberta; Beausejour, Manitoba; and Regina, Saskatchewan. He says he loved them all!
Although David has been in ministry for many years, he also worked as a Greyhound bus driver for several years previous to heading to university, where his initial training and educational pursuits were in the field of education. It was at a later date that David enrolled in a Master’s of Divinity program in Saskatoon.
He has always been interested in promoting the church as part of the community, wherever he has found himself on his faith journey – having always been involved in exploring integration with the community that pulses outside the doors of our churches. That might have been organizing Peace Festivals, being a welcoming presence for nursery schools that run 5 days a week - as well as AA groups, singing groups, dance groups, theatre groups, or encouraging relationships with Muslims and other faith groups - along with making connections with our First Nations brothers and sisters.
David’s particular interest and passion - along with all the regular duties one might expect of a minister - is the building up of relationships between people and organizations for the betterment, harmony and health of us all. In his eyes, it is all part of our call to faith and a deepened spiritual connection.
