QVC, a Social Group for the GBLT Christian Community (Contact address: QVC@shaw.ca)
The Queer Victoria Christians (QVC) looked to congregations in our Victoria Presbytery for support in order to be given an opportunity to come to know one another as individuals. It was hoped that congregations might support them in cases where there was discrimination due to homophobia, help them to achieve acceptance and equality in their church communities and families, and generally develop a healthy relationship between the QVC members and the members of local churches. This led in March of 2011 to QVC becoming an outreach ministry of the Shady Creek / Brentwood Bay Pastoral Charge. (By the way, the GLBTQ in the title refers to Gay, Lesbian, Bi, Trans, Queer and Questioning people.) .
The first meetings of the QVC took place at First Met and later moved to members' homes. These meetings were advertised in the local papers, and the group is now comprised of members from four or five congregations, plus some with no direct United Church affiliation. Their stated objective is "to have fun and socialize with other Queer Christians and provide mutual acceptance and support through these activities."
Their objectives are to be achieved through "respectful communication guidelines:"
R - take Responsibility for what you say and feel, without blaming others
E - be Sensitive to differences in communication styles (do not interpret through our own assumptions)
P - Ponder what you hear and feel before you speak
E - Examine your own assumptions and perceptions
C - keep Confidentiality (Info shared here stays here. Don't talk about someone else unless it is with your counsellor)
T - Trust ambiguity because we are not here to debate who is right or wrong. (Trust that each person is speaking the truth according to his/her experience)
