The Mission and Service Fund (M&S) of the United Church of Canada enables the members of the Shady Creek congregation to connect with and support the church’s work of ministry and mission beyond our own community, across Canada, and abroad.
A recipient of M&S funds in Victoria is Our Place, whose mission and ministry is mainly to homeless people and others in need of food, shelter, clothing, counselling, etc.
The M&S Fund also connects us to our faith as we proclaim: "We live in God's world, we believe in God who works in us and others by the Spirit." The Fund connects us with sister congregations across Canada and beyond and affords us the opportunity to offer a loving hand of support when needed.
At Shady Creek United Church we set an annual M&S target, which is over and above all other local expenses. It is often only a few thousand dollars but, with all other United Church Congregations across Canada, plus gifts from individuals and other sources, it will help the M&S Fund reach its goal of $30 million – an amount the Fund has been able to reach for the past ten years.
The M&S Fund enables the United Church of Canada to quickly respond to emergency situations immediately. Our church works with partners in Canada and 37 other countries, which means less money is spent coordinating and delivering aid and more money goes directly where it is needed. Countless hours of work are also provided by scores of United Church volunteers, thus making the M&S funds go further still. The M&S fund is indeed a lifeline for many in Canada and beyond.
